My own journey towards healthy living did not start until I was in my early 40s. I had raised my family on processed and fast food. We didn’t think too much about the consequences of what we were putting into our bodies until a series of serious health challenges. We survived each one, but I knew in my heart we had to make major changes. It felt like an insurmountable mountain. I would try to lead by example, but honestly didn’t know where to start. I found myself swinging with different fads and plans-all of which ended unsuccessfully. I began to feel hopeless about my family ever being truly healthy. Then my husband became very ill. We went through months of testing and vacillating diagnoses; until we finally learned that he had MS (multiple sclerosis) in November of 2015.
During his yearlong health crisis, I fervently began to research health and wellness. I began to follow Dr. Bill Sears and found myself learning and growing with each book or conference call. I enrolled in Dr. Sears Wellness Institute with the intention of learning all I could to help my family achieve their greatest health. I found all his teachings to be easy to understand, yet grounded in proven science. The tools and teachings I learned from The Wellness Institute were easy to implement in my own home. I shed 15 pounds, began to move more, and think about food differently. My husband began to check labels and ingredients in the food he consumed. He gave up a daily habit of drinking Sprite and began to run regularly; which absolutely thrills his neurologist. Our 17 year old daughter has even embraced the changes in our home (very different than the house she grew up in) and has begun to learn skills in the kitchen that had previously not interested her. We are all much more aware of our choices and exchanging our unhealthy habits for better ones- slowly but steadily.
My wife started this journey for me. While there is no cure yet for MS; I am learning that my choices and habits have a great impact on my health, happiness, and wellness.

The term "Turning North" comes from Deuteronomy 2:3 ("You have circled this mountain long enough; turn northward".) In other words; if we want different results, we have to change the way we've been doing things. Turning North is a movement of likeminded people who are ready to learn about nutrition and wellness and use that knowledge to improve their choices one by one. It only takes a small change to begin turning in the opposite direction. Leave behind your feelings of discouragement and join us in Turning North.
